Women’s Championship: Ones to Watch (Part Two)

Southampton: Aimee Palmer

The 24 year old joined in the summer and is one to watch throughout the season as she joined the southern side from Leicester City. The midfielder started at Bristol City and made her senior debut there in 2017 while studying for her A Levels. In the 2017-18 season she made 18 appearances for the South West side before moving to Manchester United in the Inaugural season and stayed there for two seasons.

She was on loan in the 2019/20 season at Sheffield United but at the end of January in 2020 she was recalled by Manchester United, she made 18 appearances for the Blades and scored on six occasions. She then made 65 appearances for Bristol City between 2020 and 2023 before moving to Leicester for a season and then arriving at Southampton.

Aimee Palmer is a midfielder to watch as she chops and changes throughout the midfield and loves to score at any given opportunity and when she can. You might even see her on the scoresheet or assisting a few goals throughout the season due to the way she puts hard work in.

Blackburn Rovers: Jemima Dahou

The 19 year old moved from Manchester City’s Academy this summer to Blackburn Rovers of the Championship. She rose from their academy and made her debut for City against Nottingham Forest in January 2022, and went on to feature four more times throughout the season. Her first goal for Manchester City came against Bristol City of which they won 8-1.

She went on a dual-registration last year to Blackburn and liked it so much she signed a contract at Ewood Park. The 2005 born midfielder is one to watch as she looks to find more appearances for the North West side and to put her trade into good use. She slots between other midfielders and loves to score and assist when she is put on the pitch and is definitely one to watch this season and beyond.

Sheffield United: Eva Butler

The just turned 19 year old made her senior debut in January of this year and went on to feature more and more times in the squad and a couple of times came off the bench. She had 16 goals in the U21’s last season and with Isobel Goodwin moving to London City Lionesses she could be just the player Sheffield United need.

She is a tricky forward player as she always seems to look forward and focus on the goals in her game as well as trying to assist others and helping them and that is why she is my Sheffield United One to Watch as well as herself being so young!

Portsmouth: Annie Hutchings

The 2003 born full back was part of the Manchester City Academy as well as Jemima Dahou and was a regular in Gareth Taylor’s City Squad in the 2022/23 season. She made her senior debut against Blackburn Rovers in the Continental Cup in October 2022 after coming off the bench. She was on a dual-registration to Blackburn Rovers from January 2023 to the end of the 2022/23 season and then for the duration of the 23/24 season as well as Dahou.

In the summer, she then permanently moved to Portsmouth as the side just got promoted. She is a player to watch this season as she comes up and down both sides of the pitch as a fullback and provides crosses when she can, to try and get on the scoresheet herself. Hutchings is a very versatile and technical fullback as she defends as well as coming forward up the pitch.

Sunderland: Kiera Flannery

The West Ham loanee started her youth career at Arsenal before joining the hammers in 2022 aged 16, and chose 41 after her idol Declan Rice as she is a West Ham supporter. She made her WSL Debut on 28th September 2022 against Chelsea and came on for Lisa Evans. In February 2023, she went on loan to Gillingham before joining Reading on loan from January 2024 to the end of the season.

The midfielder is a technical player and at only 19 years old, she is a player to watch throughout the season when she takes her opportunities on the pitch. She normally comes forward and whenever she finds space she tries and fires a ball into the box to get an assist on the board.
